Further adding to the pre-poll drama in the national capital, Delhi Police on Wednesday registered a case after a vehicle labeled "Punjab government" was intercepted with cash, liquor, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) pamphlets, an official said.

It has been reported that Delhi Police has initiated legal proceedings in the matter, and a case is being registered at Tilak Marg police station.

According to the official, the vehicle was caught by the Flying Squad team in the New Delhi district. This team bears the responsibility to attend to all Model Code of Conduct violations and all complaints related to liquor, arms and cash used for elections.

'Dirty politics': AAP reacts

A day after the car was intercepted, the AAP alleged it was part of the BJP's "dirty politics" to defame it and its government in Punjab. At a press conference, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh demanded that the Election Commission take cognisance of the matter and ensure action against those behind the "conspiracy".

"The dirty politics of BJP has stooped so low that they are using a fake registration number vehicle shown to be carrying money and publicity material of a party to defame the AAP, Punjab government and the Punjab Bhawan," he alleged.

Singh also lashed at the BJP and Delhi Police, saying it was a matter of concern that a fake registration number vehicle was roaming around in the city.

'Number plate forged and fake': Punjab Govt

Responding to the allegation, the Punjab government in a statement said that the Department of Transport received information that a vehicle bearing Punjab's registration number 'PB35AE1342' was intercepted in Delhi carrying illegal liquor and some unaccounted cash.

According to the state's official record, the vehicle under the aforementioned registration number is a 'Ford Eco Sport' model of 2018 while the four-wheeler intercepted by Delhi Police is a 'Hyundai Creta'. This confirms that the vehicle's number plate is forged and fake, the Punjab Government said in the official statement.

"We have searched our records and found that no such vehicle is owned or hired by the government of Punjab. The intercepted vehicle does not belong to the government of Punjab at all," it said.

Delhi BJP reacts

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, in a statement, expressed shock over the incident. He said Rs 10 lakh cash, liquor and AAP election material was recovered from a Punjab government car in Delhi.

"Till now, we thought Arvind Kejriwal institutionalised corruption in Delhi government, polluted Yamuna and Delhi's air but today we understand that he has polluted Delhi's political system too," Sachdeva said.

Sachdeva said he doesn't remember a single incident of recovery of such a huge amount of cash and liquor in 35 years of public life.ye7
