Yesterday, the Taguig City Regional Trial Court released a decision finding 17 Abu Sayyaf members guilty of 21 counts of kidnapping and serious illegal detention with ransom. RTC Branch 153 Judge Mariam Bien sentenced the 17 to life in prison. They were also ordered to pay each of the 21 victims P100,000 as civil indemnity and P200,000 in moral and exemplary damages, with an annual interest rate of six percent from the date of finality of judgment until fully paid.
Perhaps with Duterte answering questions before the quad comm, his loyalists in the Senate will follow his lead and also face the House. Sen. Ronald dela Rosa, Duterte’s first PNP chief who designed Oplan Tokhang, and Sen. Bong Go are invoking interparliamentary courtesy in refusing to face the quad comm. Instead the two prefer to conduct their own patently self-serving probe into Duterte’s war on drugs. Their inability to see the conflict of interest in such a probe says a lot about the quality of senators today.
Reports said the vehicles were traveling in opposite directions of the Davao-Digos Road in Barangay Binugao when they figured in the accident.
Probers expressed belief that one of the vehicles developed engine trouble, causing the driver, identified as Kadaffy Salik, to lose control of the wheel.
Salik’s vehicle reportedly swerved, causing it to collide with the van driven by Omar Lastimoso.
Police said the victims, who were returning home from an excursion, were passengers of Lastimoso.
